Remove the “Download Windows Search” Prompt in Internet Explorer 8 Address Bar

Issue: You may see “Download Windows Search to improve history and favorites results” message while entering the website address as shown in the below screen shot:

Cause: This is not an issue and is by design. You may proceed with the download and install Windows Search. If you don’t want to install the Windows search, you may proceed with the solution provided below. However, when you install the Windows search, it will remove the prompt in a week days.

 

Solution: To remove the “Download Windows Search” Prompt, you have to modify the registry. The following steps will guide you modifying the same.

However, it is always recommended to backup the Windows registry before making any changes as incorrect changes may cause stability to the Operating system and you may need to reinstall the Operating system.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main WindowsSearch

If you still see the prompt, perform the following:

Go to registry editor and navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Search

This will resolve the issue.

Create a InPrivate Shortcut for Secure Browsing

Description:

InPrivate Browsing is a new feature added in Internet Explorer 8. This is a great feature and helps the people who are not very good at Internet. This feature removes all the traces of your browsing, including history, temporary files and log-in data.

However, the InPrivate option will be Off by default. Instead of switching the option On every time, you may create create a shortcut to launch just a specific website with InPrivate mode activated.

Below steps will help you to create a shortcut:

Procedure:

1. Right-click on the Desktop area, and select New, Shortcut
2. Cut and paste the following line in the Shortcut window:

“%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore” -private www.ietips.net

NOTE - If you Need only the IE shortcut without a site, use the below:

“%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore” -private

3. Click Next.
4. Add a name (If you include a Site, best is to give the site name) for the new shortcut, e.g. InPrivate - IETIPS

5. Click Finish.

Now you can launch your favorite site/blank IE window in InPrivate mode easily with out switching on the InPrivate mode option every time.

Open in new Tab/Window option does not work in Internet Explorer 8

Issue:

When you try to open a link in a new Window or Tab, you might not see any response from Internet Explorer 8. This may mostly happens after upgrading to Internet Explorer 8

Cause:

This issue happens due to one of the following:

1. Insupportive Add-ons.
2. Corrupted IE files.

Resolution:

To resolve this issue, perform the following:

Disabling the Add-ons:

1. click Tools, Manage Add-ons
2. Select Enable or Disable Add-ons option
3. Disable all the add-ons that are under “currently being used by Internet Exploreroption.

To disable the add-on, click each add-on and click disable radio button at the bottom.

4. click OK and restart Internet Explorer when prompted

This should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists, you may proceed with the below solution:

Re-registering the actxprxy.dll  file:

actxprxy.dll file is a module that contains functions used for Marshaling of ActiveX COM interfaces and is used by Internet Explorer.

Follow the Instructions below to re register the actxprxy.dll :

1. Click Start, Run and type cmd and press enter.

In the command Prompt window type Regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and press Enter key.

If the command was successfully executed, You will receive the message DllRegisterServer in actxprxy.dll succeeded window.

Restart your IE window and it should now be able to open Hyperlinks in either new Window or new tab.

Restoring Back and Forward Buttons to original location

Issue: The “Stop” & “Refreshbuttons are displayed next to back and forward buttons (before the address bar), instead of next to the address bar.

Reason: This is a new feature added in IE8 and is by design.

Resolution:

1. Hold Win key and press R (To open the Run dialog box)
2. Type gpedit.msc and click OK.

3. Under Local Computer Policy, Expand Computer Configuration, and Administrative Templates.
4. Goto Windows Components

5. Double-click Internet Explorer, Toolbars

6. Double-clickSet location of Stop and Refresh buttons

If you enable this setting, the Stop and Refresh buttons will be next to the Forward and Back buttons, and cannot be moved by the user.

If you disable this setting, the Stop and Refresh buttons will be next to the Address bar, and cannot be moved by the user.

If you do not configure this setting, the Stop and Refresh buttons will be next to the Address bar by default, and the user can chose to move them.
