Unable to open https:// or Secured web sites after upgrading to Internet Explorer 8

Issue - You may not be able to browse the secured websites (https://) websites after upgrading to Internet Explorer 8.

Cause - This issue happens due to one of the following:

- Upgraded to IE8 with some add-ons.
- Third party incompatible add-ons.
- Website not in trusted sites.
- Existing temporary files causing issues to open.

Resolution:

To resolve the issue, perform the following:

NOTE: Close any other Internet Explorer sessions, before you process the steps mentioned below.

1. Clear the Cache:

To clear the cache, you may follow the steps mentioned below:

- Open Internet Explorer.
- Go to Tools, Internet Options
- Click Delete Files, Delete all content.

2. Clear the SSL Cache:

- Open Internet Explorer.
- Go to Tools, Internet Options.
- Click Content tab.
- Click Clear SSL State button.

3. Add the Secure Site to your list of trusted sites.

- Open Internet Explorer.
- Go to Tools, Internet Options.
- Click Security tab.
- Click Trusted sites icon.
- Click Sites button.
- Enter the web site and click Add.

This should resolve the issue.

If you are still not allowed to open a secured site, you may try the below advanced troubleshooting steps:

4. Disable the third party browser extensions.

- Open Internet Explorer.
- Go to Tools, Internet Options.
- Click Advanced tab.
- Navigate down and uncheck “Enable third-party browser extensions” check box.
- Click Apply and close and open IE.

5. Re-register IE DLL and OCX files. You can download the “Fix IE” tool which is available under Fixes of our Download page.

This should resolve the issue.

The Fix IE utility that was created by me along with TWC has won TOP award. As mentioned in my previous post, the Fix IE utility will re-register most of the IE DLL and OCX files and will fix any issues with your Internet Explorer. It works well for IE7, and IE8. But, not tested on the previous releases of IE.

This utility will increase the performance of IE, resolves issues such as unable to open links, Windows, tabs etc.,
