Security fixes, JavaScript update bog down Internet Explorer 8

No comments November 5th, 2009

I was surprised to see an article by Scott in beta news website, where he mentions that the Security fixes, and JavaScript update will bog down IE8. He mentions in the article that they have noticed a trend of IE8 performance dragging down over time, while every other major Windows browser in the field was headed the other direction — and fast. Early this month, when Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 appeared imminent (and still is at this moment), we calculated the performance difference between IE8 and IE7 at about 75%.

However, after installing the security fixes that was released in the month of October, and the update for Microsoft’s JavaScript (JScript) engine, the performance has averaged down to 54%.

I hope Microsoft will further look in at these issues and present a browser which will compete with other browsers.

MS Feeds the poor for every IE8 upgrade :)

No comments October 21st, 2009

This evening while browsing, I’ve read an article in tomshardware site that says “Microsoft will now donate the equivalent of sixteen meals to the poor every time someone upgrades from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 8″.

I am not sure how far this is true, but can see that this was blogged on 1st September. I’ve started googling for more information on the same and was not successful in getting any further information except the same information.

However, I am much surprised to see a PCBD error for the website that was provided to download Internet Explorer 8. Surprisingly, the URL has been named as “browse for the better” which matches the feeding program. To know further about this program, I’ve checked whois.com website and find that it was registered by Microsoft.

If this program is really sponsored by Microsoft, I am baffled.. why MS is not highlighting this program much in the communities and feed as more as possible to the poor :)

Remove the “Download Windows Search” Prompt in Internet Explorer 8 Address Bar

No comments October 15th, 2009

Issue: You may see “Download Windows Search to improve history and favorites results” message while entering the website address as shown in the below screen shot:

Cause: This is not an issue and is by design. You may proceed with the download and install Windows Search. If you don’t want to install the Windows search, you may proceed with the solution provided below. However, when you install the Windows search, it will remove the prompt in a week days.

Solution: To remove the “Download Windows Search” Prompt, you have to modify the registry. The following steps will guide you modifying the same.

However, it is always recommended to backup the Windows registry before making any changes as incorrect changes may cause stability to the Operating system and you may need to reinstall the Operating system.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main WindowsSearch

If you still see the prompt, perform the following:

Go to registry editor and navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Search

This will resolve the issue.
