Security fixes, JavaScript update bog down Internet Explorer 8

No comments November 5th, 2009

I was surprised to see an article by Scott in beta news website, where he mentions that the Security fixes, and JavaScript update will bog down IE8. He mentions in the article that they have noticed a trend of IE8 performance dragging down over time, while every other major Windows browser in the field was headed the other direction — and fast. Early this month, when Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 appeared imminent (and still is at this moment), we calculated the performance difference between IE8 and IE7 at about 75%.

However, after installing the security fixes that was released in the month of October, and the update for Microsoft’s JavaScript (JScript) engine, the performance has averaged down to 54%.

I hope Microsoft will further look in at these issues and present a browser which will compete with other browsers.

Remove the “Download Windows Search” Prompt in Internet Explorer 8 Address Bar

No comments October 15th, 2009

Issue: You may see “Download Windows Search to improve history and favorites results” message while entering the website address as shown in the below screen shot:

Cause: This is not an issue and is by design. You may proceed with the download and install Windows Search. If you don’t want to install the Windows search, you may proceed with the solution provided below. However, when you install the Windows search, it will remove the prompt in a week days.

Solution: To remove the “Download Windows Search” Prompt, you have to modify the registry. The following steps will guide you modifying the same.

However, it is always recommended to backup the Windows registry before making any changes as incorrect changes may cause stability to the Operating system and you may need to reinstall the Operating system.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main WindowsSearch

If you still see the prompt, perform the following:

Go to registry editor and navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Search

This will resolve the issue.

Buttons, Boxes and Text go tiny with Internet Explorer 8

No comments October 3rd, 2009

Issue - The Buttons, text in the page, and text boxes where you enter user name, password, and search boxes may look tiny after upgrading to Internet Explorer 8.

Cause - This issue happens with one of the following:

1. Visual style option
2. CSS that was set by third party software
3. Add-ons

Resolution -

To resolve this issue, perform the following:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Go to Tools, Internet Options and choose the Advanced tab.
3. uncheck the “Enable visual styles on buttons and controls in webpages” option.
4. Click OK.

The above solution should resolve the issue. If the problem still persists, perform the following.

Download the IE8.CSS [Download Link] and perform the following:

1. Go to Internet Options, General tab.
2. Click Accessibility button.
3. Select Format documents using my style sheet and choose the ie8.css file
4. Click OK.

If the issue still persists, see if a browser add-on is causing the problem.

Start Internet Explorer without add-ons:

Right-click the IE icon on the desktop. Choose Start without add-ons.

If the issue is resolved, then an incompatible browser add-on which was installed is causing the issue.

Set Default homepage for InPrivate Browsing

No comments September 21st, 2009

Description: I myself like the new IE8 feature, InPrivate Browsing. However, InPrivate browsing doesn’t inherit the properties of the default browsing and doesn’t open my default home page. I am baffled to see About:InPrivate page when I open a new session.

The following tweak helped me to set a default home page for InPrivate browsing too :)

Procedure:

1. Click Start, Run.
2. Type regedit.
3. Navigate to the below registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs

4. Double-click InPrivate option and set your favorite URL.

5. Exit the registry.

For those who are not good at registry modification, I’ve created a .reg file. You may download and run the .reg file [Download Link]. However, this defaults to www.ietips.net website. If you wish to change it, right-click the .reg file and change the URL with the URL you wish to change.

InPrivate option doesn’t work in IE8

No comments September 17th, 2009

Issue - You may have issues enabling the InPrivate option in Internet Explorer 8.

Cause - This issue happens with Live Family Safety software that was installed.

Resolution - Currently, InPrviate Options doesn’t work when the Live Family Safety software is installed and the Activity reporting is on.

As the Live Family Safety option has more features than InPrivate browsing, it overrides IE8 options.

If you wish to enable the InPrivate Option, you may need to uninstall the Live Family Safety software.

To uninstall Live Family Safety software, visit Link & MS KB article.
